FAQ: Common QuickBooks Desktop Errors and Resolutions Follow
The following sections are common error messages and suggestions that may occur when you work with QuickBooks Desktop. If you see one of these error messages in the Auty-History, Review, and Validation or the Process Summary, follow the steps in the SOLUTION so you can resolve the issues.
ERROR 500: Insufficient Permissions - 1
ERROR MESSAGE: [500] Could not execute the specified command: Insufficient permission level to perform this action.”:
SOLUTION: You are connected to QuickBooks desktop with a user that does not have permission to read, update or insert data required for this integration. Please [Login and authenticate] QuickBooks with the [Admin] user or if you already authenticate this company file with admin rights, please click the [Fix Connection] button to troubleshoot this issue. Please see the [User Guide] and video for further help.
ERROR 517: Invalid Company File Path - 2
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. Could not start QuickBooks. (Possible solution: If QuickBooks is not running you must specify a CompanyFile.).).”,
SOLUTION: The given company file path is invalid. Please provide the valid QuickBooks company file path then click [Set up QuickBooks Connection] button.
ERROR 517: Different File Open - 3
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. A QuickBooks company data file is already open and it is different from the one requested or there are multiple company files open..).”,
ERROR Message: The QuickBooks file path you set up is different from the QuickBooks Company that opens in the Background. Please set up the right QuickBooks Company file path or click [Fix Connection] to troubleshoot your connection.
ERROR 517: QuickBooks Application is not Accessible - 4
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. A modal dialog box is showing in the QuickBooks user interface. Your application cannot access QuickBooks until the user dismisses the dialog box..).”,
ERROR Message: The QuickBooks application is currently not accessible. Please close all Popup windows to access QuickBooks Application.
ERROR 517: Authentication Failed - 5
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. This application has not accessed this QuickBooks company data file before. The QuickBooks administrator must grant an application permission to access a QuickBooks company data file for the first time..).
SOLUTION: Autymate requires QuickBooks Desktop authentication to access data from QuickBooks Application. Please Authenticate the request with [Admin Rights] and try again.
ERROR 517: Authentication Required - 6
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. Unable to find the QuickBooks Request Processor on your system. Please make sure your application is running a 32-bit process and that QuickBooks 2002 Pro or higher is installed on your system, or use the Remote Connector. (Error: 0x80040430)..).
SOLUTION: Autymate requires QuickBooks Desktop authentication to access data from QuickBooks Application. Please open the QuickBooks desktop application in the Background to Authenticate the request and click on the [Test Connection] button.”,
ERROR 517: Invalid Company File Path - 7
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. If no file is open in QuickBooks, a file must be specified..).
SOLUTION: The company file you want to set up is not currently Authenticated with the Autymate application. Instead, please open the QuickBooks application in the Background and click the [Test Connection] button.
ERROR 201: Connection Closed - 8
ERROR MESSAGE: [201] Cannot execute a command on a closed connection.—A connection must be opened before it can be tested.
SOLUTION: Autymate application is unable to connect with the QuickBooks Desktop application. Please close all Popup windows to access QuickBooks Application or click [Fix Connection] to troubleshoot your connection.
ERROR 000: Unable to Connect - 9
ERROR MESSAGE: XXXX
SOLUTION: Autymate application is unable to connect with the QuickBooks Desktop application. Please open QuickBooks Application in the Background and click [Set up QuickBooks Connection] button. If you face this issue again, please report it to the Autymate support team.
ERROR 517: Services Not Running - 10
We have found that this issue happens when someone upgrades their QuickBooks and still has the old version of QuickBooks installed. To fix this issue, uninstall the previous version of QuickBooks, expand the connection details on the Autymate App Dashboard, and hit fix connection. Once the older versions of QBD are uninstalled, then run the latest version of QuickBooks and open your company file and open the Autymate desktop app. For example, let’s say you have QuickBooks Desktop 2019, and you want to upgrade to 2022, then uninstall 2019 and then install 2022. Also, if you have the Autymate Desktop App already installed on a 2021 or earlier version, please uninstall it and be sure to install the 64-bit version (Learn more here about installing the right version of Autymate.
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - Connection failed: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. 127.0.0.1:8166).
SOLUTION: Autymate services stopped. Please click [Fix Connection] to troubleshoot your connection.
ERROR 600: Target Machine actively refused to connect - 11
ERROR MESSAGE: Company File not open in Background
SOLUTION: For a fast and smooth connection, Please open the QuickBooks company file in the Background and click on the [Test Connection] button. If the application asks for permission, please grant the permission and continue.
ERROR 600: Target Machine actively refused to connect - 12
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. A QuickBooks internal error has occurred. (Suggested workaround: Try setting DelayAfterClose in QBConnectionString.).).
SOLUTION: How to resolve QuickBooks Desktop Internal Errors 1. Please open QuickBooks Desktop Application in the Background. 2. Please log in with the admin user of the company file. (if you create a new company file, please set the admin user completely (set Password, set Role)). 3. During Autymate connection with the QuickBooks Desktop application, please close all windows that open on the QuickBooks application.
ERROR 600: Target Machine actively refused to connect - 13
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. Unable to find the QuickBooks Request Processor on your system. Please make sure your application is running a 32-bit process and that QuickBooks 2002 Pro or higher is installed on your system, or use the Remote Connector. (Error: 0x80040440)..).
SOLUTION: How to resolve QuickBooks Desktop Internal Errors 1. Please open QuickBooks Desktop Application in the Background. 2. Please log in with the admin user of the company file. (if you create a new company file, please set the admin user completely (set Password, set Role)). 3. During Autymate connection with the QuickBooks Desktop application, please close all popups that open on the QuickBooks application.
ERROR 500: Insufficient Permissions - 14

Please [Login and authenticate] QuickBooks with the [Admin] user or if you already authenticate this company file with admin rights, please click the [Fix Connection] button to troubleshoot this issue. ERROR 500: The QuickBooks file path is not set up for this center - 15
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. Could not start QuickBooks..).
SOLUTION: The QuickBooks file path is not set up for this center. If your company file is open in the Background, please click on the [Test Connection] button or click the [ManageQuickBooks Connection] button for connection configuration.
ERROR FFFFFFFF: Autymate unable to make a connection with QuickBooks - 16
ERROR MESSAGE: The connection to QuickBooks failed for an unknown reason. (Error: FFFFFFFF).”,
SOLUTION: Autymate application is unable to make a connection with the QuickBooks company file. Please open your QuickBooks with Administrator rights and try again.”,
ERROR FFFFFFFF: Autymate unable to make a connection with QuickBooks - 17
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. QuickBooks can’t return sensitive information, if the company file is not protected with a complex password.).
SOLUTION: The autymate application cannot connect with the QuickBooks company file. Instead, please open your QuickBooks with Administrator rights, and if you have newly created your company file, please set your company file password.
ERROR FFFFFFFF: QuickBooks application not running with Admin rights - 18
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. The application trying to connect to QuickBooks is not supported while multiple instances of QuickBooks are running..).
SOLUTION: Please open the QuickBooks application with admin rights, or if you have already authenticated this file with the Autymate application, please close the QuickBooks application and resubmit failed integrations.
ERROR FFFFFFFF: Authentication Required -19
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. This application is unable to log into this QuickBooks company data file automatically. The QuickBooks administrator must grant permission for an automatic login through the Integrated Application preferences. If such permission was already granted, the administrator must revoke permission, save preferences, then grant the permission again..).
SOLUTION: QuickBooks authentications required! Please open the QuickBooks desktop application in the Background to authenticate the request and then click on the [Test Connection] button on [Manage Connection] UI in the Autymate app.
ERROR FFFFFFFF: Unable to get the Quickbooks company file path -20
ERROR MESSAGE: HTTP protocol error. 517 Server Error. (Error: FFFFFFFC - HTTP protocol error. If the QuickBooks company data file is not open, a call to the BeginSession method must include the name of the data file..).
SOLUTION: Please open the Quickbooks application with admin rights, or if you have already authenticated this file with the Autymate application, please close the Quickbooks application and resubmit failed integrations.
